Les Misérables- chapter 1 and 2

Chapter 1: Jean Valjean

Jean Valjean had just been released from prison and was looking for a place to eat and rest. Many locals turned him down because he was an ex-prisoner. Until one hour he was so tired that he lay down on a bench in a square, then a lady arrived and told him to try to accommodate himself in the house of the priest, named Don Myriel, who took him in and fed him. But Jean Valjean knew he wouldn’t be able to stay there forever, except that he wouldn’t have any money when he left. So he stole two lampstands and silverware, and fled the house.

Chapter 2: Fantine

Fantine was a poor woman and a single mother and had a daughter named Cossette. One day they found a family where she offered to stay with their daughter until she found a job, so that she would have enough money to take care of her daughter. What she didn’t know was that this family, the Thénardiers, needed money, so they charged for lodging. During the other months, the Thénardiers asked for more and more money, leaving Cossete more and more miserable. Meanwhile, Fantine had lost her job and started doing everything to get money, give her hair, donate her teeth and even become a prostitute.
