Com a influência dos Estados Unidos e URSS, foi criado o “mundo bipolar”, que foi dividido com base na postura ideológica e no nível de desenvolvimento, que caracterizou a famosa Guerra Fria. Para quem não sabe, a Guerra Fria (assim chamada pois era um conflito ideológico e militar e não ocorreu nenhum conflito armado) ocorreu a partir da década de 1940 até o início de 1990.

       Então, foi criado a Teoria dos Mundos, que dividia os países em 3 grupos.

O primeiro mundo: países capitalistas e com grande desenvolvimento econômico, dos quais o EUA era a superpotência;

O segundo mundo: países socialistas, dos quais a URSS era a superpotência;

O terceiro mundo: países capitalistas com pouco desenvolvimento econômico.

       Como tinha a possibilidade de ocorrer um combate armado, as duas potências investiram muito no setor bélico, que foi chamada como corrida armamentista. Devido a esses investimentos, foi possibilitado investimentos além dos bélicos, como os tecnológicos, espaciais, entre outros. Porém a URSS investiu mais do que devia no setor bélico e esqueceu dos setores como o de saúde, infraestrutura, educação, entre outros. Os EUA investiu tanto no setor bélico e tanto nos outros setores, e assim os EUA tiveram níveis maiores de desenvolvimento do que a URSS.
