As ginastas alemãs

Sexualization in Olympic Clothing
German athletes wear overalls as a protest against sexualization in gymnastic
clothing
Olympic sports have rules about their clothing, for better adaptation and evaluation of the
activity performed. In some sports the uniform is not as important as, for example, in
gymnastics where the rules are strict. Clothes are necessarily tight and short, fitting the
athlete’s curves to improve the judges’ view of the movements performed. But often this
factor makes them uncomfortable about exposing their bodies to TV, where they can be put
in an uncomfortable and vulnerable situation due to nasty and disrespectful comments about
their bodies and uniforms.
Many athletes are supporting new moves for less uneven and more comfortable clothing.
This is not happening today or in recent years, but these movements that support change
are newer and gaining more strength.
At the latest Tokyo Olympics, German gymnasts wear tight-fitting overalls instead of tights
that show off their legs. The choice of this change in clothing did not interfere in the judges’
evaluation, because even though it was a jumpsuit going to the feet, it was still fair for the
best evaluation and the athletes were able to feel more comfortable while performing and the
presentation was broadcast worldwide.
German gymnasts weren’t the first to change clothes; Norwegian beach handball athletes
also made clothing changes during the sport’s European championship. Instead of wearing
bikini bottoms and a sports bra, they wore shorts at the bottom. The team was fined around
9,000 reais for wearing more comfortable clothes to play the sport. The singer Pink did not
think the situation was fair, and decided to pay the fine on behalf of the athletes.
Many athletes have commented on this; like gymnast Sarah Voss who says: “Whenever
you don’t feel safe, it distracts you from what you want to perform. I think feeling safe and not
thinking about what other people can or can’t see is a relief when you can compete like that.”
For the women’s technical coordinator of the Brazilian Gymnastics Confederation,
Adriana Alves, the situation of athletes not being able to choose the outfit they feel most
comfortable with and still being fined for wearing shorts in a game is ridiculous. Apart from all

the physical and emotional stress that athletes go through, still having to go through this type
of situation is not fair.
The campaign does not aim for all athletes to wear long attire, but rather for them to feel
free to wear the uniform that makes them feel better and more comfortable. The protest also
wants not only comfort and security, but that women’s bodies stop being seen as a form of
audience and profit. This is still a very sensitive issue, but extremely important, and should
be discussed further by the population, which is used to turning a blind eye to this type of
conflict.
The world and the population are always looking for change and evolution, it is in these
times and situations that we have to evolve and change. Do our best to support and make a
difference for the world to evolve. Movements like this were past time to gain more strength.
