Os principais pensadores da Escola de Frankfurt são Max Horkheimer, Teodoro Adorno, Herbert Marcuse, Erich Fromm, Walter Benjamin e Jürgen Habermas. As discussões levantadas por esses filósofos estão na área da Filosofia e da Sociologia, e discutem os temas: autoritarismo, família, cultura de massa, liberdade e função da ciência e da técnica,
entre outros.
Filiados à ideologia marxista, as críticas feitas pelos pensadores de Frankfurt são em relação ao sistema capitalista.
Os pensadores de Frankfurt organizaram-se no início do século XX. Eles se perguntavam como era possível, mesmo após a Revolução Industrial e o Iluminismo, a humanidade continuar sofrendo com tanta miséria, exclusão e fome. Segundo esses pensadores, o progresso não está a serviço da humanidade, e sim, a serviço dos interesses de instituições
privadas.
Com o pensamento desses filósofos foi desenvolvido um conceito chamado “razão instrumental”, que quer dizer que a racionalidade está a serviço do capitalismo. A Partir disso, cada um dos pensadores de Frankfurt se dedicou a investigar algum aspecto dos desdobramentos do capitalismo nas sociedades em que viviam.
A razão instrumental é o oposto da chamada razão crítica.

Frankfurt Thinkers
The main thinkers at the Frankfurt School are Max Horkheimer, Teodoro Adorno, Herbert Marcuse, Erich Fromm, Walter Benjamin and Jürgen Habermas. The discussions raised by these philosophers are in the area of Philosophy and Sociology, they discussed the themes: authoritarianism, family, mass culture, freedom and function of science and technique,
among others.
Affiliated with Marxist ideology, the criticisms made by Frankfurt thinkers are in relation to the capitalist system.
Frankfurt thinkers were organized in the early 20th century. They wondered how it was possible, even after the Industrial Revolution and the Enlightenment, humanity continued to suffer from so much misery, exclusion and hunger. According to these thinkers, progress is not at the service of humanity, but at the service of the interests of private institutions.
With the thinking of these philosophers, a concept called “instrumental reason” was developed, which means that rationality is at the service of capitalism. As a result, each of Frankfurt’s thinkers dedicated themselves to investigating some aspect of the unfolding of capitalism in the societies in which they lived.
Instrumental reason is the opposite of what is called critical reason.
